President Donald Trump on Monday insisted that the first party to end the Senate filibuster would be the one to survive in the long term.

The filibuster is a procedural hurdle in the upper chamber that requires legislation to receive 60 votes to close debate. The rule has been in the crosshairs of both parties at different times. Presently, Trump has fumed over the rule as an obstacle to passing the SAVE America Act, a marquis voter ID bill.

"Whichever Party Terminates the Filibuster FIRST will be the Party that survives and thrives. If the Dumocrats win this race, however, America will rapidly become nothing more than a Third World Nation!" he posted on Truth Social.

His comments follow him pressuring Senate Majority Leader John Thune to cancel the August recess to pass the SAVE America Act. Trump has also pressured Thune to fire the Senate parliamentarian and pass it via reconciliation, which bypasses the filibuster.

Reconciliation is limited to budget-related items and the parliamentarian has repeatedly blocked efforts by Congress to insert unrelated items into reconciliation bills.

Thune has thus far declined to either alter Senate rules or fire the parliamentarian.
