Three illegal immigrants being held in an immigrant detention center are disputing the Department of Homeland Security's account of the events that led to the fatal shooting of an illegal immigrant on Tuesday.

According to the DHS, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was in the U.S. illegally. During a traffic stop arrest on Tuesday that was part of an enforcement operation, Araujo allegedly refused to comply with officers' commands.

“From information we are receiving, he rammed an ICE law enforcement vehicle, refused to follow multiple verbal commands, and weaponized his vehicle in an attempt to run over an ICE law enforcement officer, resulting in our officer firing his weapon in self-defense,” the agency said in a statement.

According to the three immigrants, a federal officer fired at them almost immediately after they exited. Attorney Hugo Balderas-Ibarra, who spoke with the men, shared the men's accounts with the Washington Post. Jose Trinidad Rojas, 51, said in a handwritten statement that the DHS account of what happened is a "lie."

The men, who are not being housed together, were interviewed separately, and the attorney said they all told the same story.
