President Donald Trump on Wednesday confirmed that he had pressed members of NATO to commit to the pledged 5% defense spending targets and had pressured the holdout nations to make plans to conform.
"In the working session this morning, we discussed the progress other members are making toward the 5% target," he said. "Some have truly answered the call and others are making big changes, and will be answering the call ... I urge all nations to accelerate their plans to get to the benchmark as quickly as possible."
Trump touted that the last NATO summit had seen the member nations commit to the 5% defense spending target. Most of the member nations have since made efforts to meet that target, though several have declined to do so.
The summit also saw Trump revisit his bid to acquire Greenland and criticize Spain over its unwillingness to support the Iran war or meet its defense spending targets.
