A federal judge on Wednesday blocked President Donald Trump's executive order imposing a proof-of-citizenship requirement when registering to vote.

The ruling comes as Trump continues to push the Senate to pass the SAVE America Act, a marquis voter ID bill that has languished in the upper chamber due to the 60-vote filibuster threshold.

U.S. District Court Judge Denise Casper issued the ruling, saying that the Constitution “does not grant the President any specific powers over elections," the Associated Press reported.

The ruling is likely to drive Trump to ramp up the pressure on lawmakers to pass legislation to the same effect. Also on Wednesday, he announced he would not sign a major housing bill until the Senate passed the SAVE America Act.
