This year’s Juneteenth celebrations were marked by a series of violent incidents in cities across the country, from Oakland, California, to Chicago, Illinois, and several places in between.

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, the day enslaved Black Americans in Galveston, Texas, were informed of their freedom more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. The holiday is meant to recognize liberation, history, and resilience. But this year, a number of public gatherings connected to the holiday were overshadowed by shootings, fights, and other violence.

In Oakland, 15 people were shot during a Juneteenth celebration last Wednesday, according to PBS News.

Investigators reportedly found more than 50 shell casings at the scene. At least one of the victims was listed in critical condition, and the people wounded ranged in age from 20 to 30 years old.

Police also said officers faced hostility as they tried to move people out of danger. According to reports, several people attacked officers while authorities were attempting to get the crowd to safety.

In Kansas City, Missouri, a deadly shooting happened near a Juneteenth event Friday night, according to The Kansas City Star. Several people were injured, and one man was killed.

Paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene. Two women were taken to a hospital with injuries that police said were not believed to be life-threatening.

By the next morning, signs of the violence were still visible. Dried blood could reportedly be seen in several spots along the road, and flowers had been placed nearby in memory of the victim.

In Atlanta, an 18-year-old was killed and a 19-year-old was shot in the elbow during another shooting tied to a Juneteenth gathering, local station WXIA-TV reported.

The shooting took place during a vigil honoring two young men who had been killed in shootings almost exactly one year earlier. Those victims, Jamarquez McCrary and Nyriek Olds, were found last year with multiple gunshot wounds in the breezeway of the same apartment complex, according to WXIA.

Chicago saw some of the worst violence of the holiday weekend. At least 38 people were shot and eight were killed, CBS News reported.

The number of shootings drew attention from President Donald Trump, who commented on the violence in a Truth Social post before the weekend’s death toll had reached eight.

In Columbia, South Carolina, a Juneteenth festival at Finlay Park was shut down after multiple fights broke out. Local station WRDW-TV reported that three juveniles and one adult were taken into custody. City officials closed the park around 7 p.m. as officers worked to break up the fights.

Tulsa, Oklahoma, also saw deadly violence during the holiday weekend. A man was killed and several others were injured in a shooting Saturday evening.

According to the Tulsa Police Department, a 22-year-old man was shot and killed beneath an interstate overpass. Seven other people, ranging in age from 17 to an elderly woman, were also struck by gunfire and taken to local hospitals for treatment.

Across several cities, celebrations that were meant to honor a historic moment of freedom instead became the backdrop for scenes of grief, panic, and bloodshed.
