New details have emerged about a gruesome beheading at a Dallas motel on Wednesday morning that left one man dead and a suspect in custody on a capital murder charge.

The victim, 50-year-old Chandra Nagamallaiah, was attacked at the Downtown Suites motel in the 3400 block of Samuell Boulevard near Interstate 30. Police arrested 37-year-old Yordanis Cobos-Martinez shortly after the incident, which occurred around 9:30 a.m.

According to a Dallas Police Department arrest affidavit, a witness said she and Cobos-Martinez were cleaning a motel room when Nagamallaiah told him not to use a broken washing machine. The affidavit states Cobos-Martinez became upset because Nagamallaiah spoke through a translator instead of directly to him.

Surveillance video showed Cobos-Martinez retrieving a machete and attacking Nagamallaiah, who fled toward the motel’s office. During the assault, Cobos-Martinez searched the victim’s pockets, took items, and fought off Nagamallaiah’s wife and son as they tried to intervene.

“He just kept hitting him and hitting until he decapitated him,” said witness Stephanie Elliott, according to WFAA.

Another witness told NBC 5 DFW that Nagamallaiah yelled for help and ran toward his wife and son. The affidavit states Cobos-Martinez kicked Nagamallaiah’s head into the parking lot before placing it in a dumpster.

Police arrested Cobos-Martinez about a block away, still armed with the machete and carrying the victim’s key card and cell phone. Officers said he was wearing a blood-soaked shirt at the time of his arrest. He later admitted to the killing, according to police.

“Our officers were proactively patrolling the area and responded quickly to take the violent criminal into custody,” said Dallas Police Executive Assistant Chief Terrence Rhodes. “Even though [the suspect] was armed with a bladed weapon, the officers showed tremendous restraint and used minimal force to apprehend him.”

Cobos-Martinez, identified in jail records as a Cuban national, faces a capital murder charge and is being held in Dallas County jail with an ICE hold. Public records link him to prior crimes in Houston, California, and Florida.

Motel owners told NBC 5 that Nagamallaiah had managed the property for two to three years and was known as a hardworking man. Detectives served a search warrant at the motel to collect evidence. According to the affidavit, Cobos-Martinez had been living at the property.
