Police reportedly arrested a 10-year-old boy in Saint-Brieuc, France, for allegedly trying to rape and then stabbing a 22-year-old woman.

The boy was charged Wednesday and is being prosecuted for attempted rape and attempted murder with a weapon, Seneweb reported, citing the Saint-Brieuc prosecutor. The boy approached the woman in a wooded area of the city on June 15, according prosecutor Julien Wattebled. He allegedly brandished a knife and demanded that she undress, TF1 Info reported in French, citing Agence France-Press (AFP). After refusing, the suspect allegedly stabbed woman in the arm and abdomen before fleeing.

Wattebled said emergency services arrived to assist the woman at around 10:30 a.m., according to France Info. The outlet described the woman as a jogger.

Police arrested the boy Tuesday, TF1 Info reported. Wattelbled said officers determined that he matched the victim’s description of attacker. He was allegedly found to have a knife reminscent of the one employed in the attack.

The boy allegedly admitted to the crime, France Info reported. A search of his residence allegedly resulted in “the seizure of clothing matching the description in the complaint.”

“The young age of the alleged suspect does not allow for the imposition of criminal measures,” Wattebled said, adding that only “educational measures can be imposed.”

After the boy was charged, the investigating judge placed a 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew on him. The judge also prohibited the boy from contacting the alleged victim and required him to “follow a health module with medical care.”

Wattebled turned the blame to knives, saying, “too many bladed weapons are circulating in the streets,” according to France Info. He said “identity checks with searches for weapons in public places” will be increased to ensure the safety of residents.

The suspects’ names, race, nationality, and other key details have not been shared.
