The sheriff of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) warned that illegal street racers and cars used in street takeovers will be confiscated and destroyed via an auto shredding device during a Wednesday press conference.

Sheriff Kevin McMahill held the press conference in front of the auto shredding device at SA Recycling on North Nellis Boulevard, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. During the press conference, a 2009 Infiniti and a 2007 Nissan 350Z were both dumped into the shredder, where they were destroyed within three minutes, the outlet reported.

The driver of the Infiniti allegedly participated in a street takeover, got “dangerously” close to spectators, and almost crashed into other vehicles, while the driver of the Nissan allegedly performed tricks using the vehicle, fled from law enforcement, and changed the vehicle’s appearance to avoid being caught, according to 8 News Now. Deputy Chief Branden Clarkson joined McMahill at the press conference and said police formed a special team in 2026 to identify and target repeat offenders who engage in illegal street racing and street takeovers. Around two dozen suspects have been arrested in connection with 36 illegal street races and takeovers. The suspects face felony evading, speeding, and stolen vehicle charges, while another 47 have been arrested on reckless driving charges.

“These aren’t just numbers. Each arrest represents opportunities to prevent crashes and dangerous behavior on our roadways,” Clarkson said during the press conference.

McMahill offered a similar sentiment.

“Illegal street racing, street takeovers, drifting, all of these things that are associated with that culture — it ultimately ends up with lives lost, property damaged and just wreaks pure havoc in our community. It is not acceptable,” McMahill said.

“If you participate in these criminal activities, we are going to arrest you, we are going to prosecute you, and we are going to destroy the vehicles that you use to create havoc,” he added.

While authorities have previously installed speed cushions and shot spotters to discourage illegal street racing and street takeovers, the problems have continued, KTNV reported. In December 2025, a 19-year-old male was arrested in connection with a Nov. 8 incident where another male was fatally shot during a street takeover, the outlet indicated.

Police destroyed the vehicles under a new law sponsored by Democratic Nevada State Assemblywoman Linda Hunt that allows the vehicles to be confiscated and destroyed if they can’t pass a safety inspection, according to FOX 5 Vegas.
