Cops Arrest Army Sergeant After Video Allegedly Shows Him Beating Toddler
A U.S. Army sergeant was arrested on Jan. 16 in Texas after a video allegedly showed him beating a toddler, according to police.
Officers from the Waco Police Department (WPD) were sent to a residence at 5:27 p.m. after a witness alleged the assault took place, the department said in a press release. Police found doorbell video of Thames allegedly beating a 3-year-old boy. The victim was taken to an area hospital, where he was evaluated for injuries, the WPD said. Cops said the boy was then released, KWTX reported.
Thames appears to strike the toddler multiple times in his torso in the video shared to social media. The child can be heard crying as Thames allegedly asks him, “Are you going to stop playing?” before picking him up by his face and walking off. Thames was taken to the McLennan County Jail after surrendering himself in to police, according to the WPD. Prosecutors charged him with injury to a child, which is a third-degree felony, KWTX reported. A spokesperson for the U.S. Army’s 1st Cavalry Division said Thames is a sergeant based out of Fort Hood in an email to the outlet.
“We are aware of the arrest of Sgt. Paul Thames for abuse of a child. The 1st Cavalry Division is in communication with law enforcement. We are disgusted by the video that has been posted,” they said. “The behavior of Sgt. Thames does not reflect the values of the 1st Cavalry Division or the U.S. Army.”
The WPD said Thames and the victim know each other, but did not specify their relationship. Waco Police Crimes Against Children Detectives responded to the incident. The alleged attack remains under investigation.
Although Thames’s bond was set at $200,000, he remains in custody on a federal detainer, the McLennan County Jail told KWTX.
The WPD directed the Daily Caller to its press release when contacted for comment. The Caller also contacted the McLennan County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Army, neither of whom immediately commented.
