Train Driver Seemingly Gets Wakeup Call Of Lifetime, Nearly Crashes Into Car
A San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) driver nearly caused a crash on Sept. 24 after appearing to fall asleep behind the controls, video shows.
In a video of the incident, the driver can be seen sitting behind the train’s controls. While the driver is initially awake, the driver’s eyes soon appear to close as the train’s speed continues to increase to 50 miles per hour. The driver’s head also appears to be down. The driver wakes up after bumping into the side of the seat, jolting passengers, who yell during the commotion.
The driver can then be heard apologizing to the passengers. “I’m sorry. Relax, relax, relax … We didn’t crash. Relax,” the driver says, according to the same video.
The incident occurred on the light-rail train around 8:37 a.m. on Sept. 24, according to KRON 4. The train was exiting the Sunset Tunnel near Duboce Park. According to a press release from the SFMTA cited by KRON 4, the train “experienced a series of unexpected jolting movements while navigating a curve at an excessive speed of 50 mph.”
The train did not derail, the video shows.
The SFMTA investigated the incident and confirmed the error was a result of “operator fatigue.”
In a Monday statement reacting to the incident, SFMTA Director of Transportation Julie Kirschbaum emphasized the importance of “safety.”
“We know this was a frightening experience for our riders, and we take that very seriously. Safety is always our top priority. We are committed to accountability in response to this specific unacceptable incident, and we are taking all necessary steps to keep Muni safe and reliable for all riders and the public,” Kirschbaum said, according to KRON 4. The SFMTA also placed the driver on “non-driving status,” CBS News reported.
The Daily Caller contacted the SFMTA, who did not immediately comment.
