Could National Championship-Winning Football Coach Be Out The Door After Massive Loss?

Things are certainly interesting in Clemson.
The Tigers came into the 2025 campaign with incredibly high expectations after punching a ticket into the 2024 College Football Playoff. Their starting quarterback Cade Klubnik returned, they brought in a grade-A recruiting class, they were voted No. 4 in the Associated Press preseason poll. Everything was in place for head coach Dabo Swinney and Clemson to have a stellar season.
Skip to mid-September and the Tigers are now in a 1-2 hole, and at this point, making the CFP again looks like mission impossible.
The Tigers suffered defeat against powerhouse LSU in their season-opening game. Okay, we’ll forgive that loss. But then we got to the Troy game, where Clemson was so bad that they ended up being down 16-3 at halftime. Yeah, the Tigers ultimately got the 27-16 victory, but how on earth did they find themselves in that situation to begin with? Against the ?! Yeah, well, things didn’t get any better Saturday for Clemson when they faced off against Georgia Tech.
Just like the Troy game, the Tigers found themselves in an early 13-0 deficit against the Yellow Jackets, with their lead being 13-7 when things got to the half. Clemson managed to make another comeback, however, taking a slight 14-13 advantage at one point in the game. Georgia Tech went on to tally another touchdown and a two-point conversion, and the Tigers would once again have to play catch-up to tie the game at 21 apiece with only three minutes and some change to go in the game.
But then … it happened. Georgia Tech kicker Aidan Birr put an absolute dagger through the hearts of Clemson with a 55-yard game-winning field goal.

Now we’re left with the question of, “so what happens with Dabo Swinney?”
I think a lot of us were thinking that after the game, and though it’s hard to picture Dabo no longer being at Clemson, you can’t help but to wonder what the university thinks of him here in the NIL era. As losses continue to pile up, and the program loses the “aura” that it has built in the Swinney era, the hierarchy might start to believe that he can’t keep up with this new day of big money college athletics.
It’s certainly something to think about as the season goes along … remember this blog the next time Clemson loses.
