Homan: Nearly 90 Percent of Asylum Claims Are Thrown Out

Roughly nine in 10 asylum claims are denied by federal immigration judges who then issue orders of removal, Border Czar Tom Homan told Border Hawk this week.

“They simple don’t qualify for asylum,” Homan stated during a press gaggle outside the White House on Monday. “They’re not escaping for fear of persecution in their homeland for race, religion, or political affiliation. They’re coming here for a better life, and I get that, but it’s not asylum.”

“We are enforcing laws and the great success we are having proves if you enforce the law, you secure the border. If you enforce the law, you make this country safe again. And that’s what we are doing.”

He also revealed that asylum claims are being expedited significantly on his watch, with many cases being adjudicated within weeks, instead of years.

“When you are in an ICE-contracted facility, you get a hearing with a judge within 40 days. Under the Biden administration, they put [asylum seekers] in the custody of an NGO who put them in a hotel at $500 a night — because they know doing that would push their hearing out 3, 5, 7 years because an immigration judge would prioritize those in detention,” Homan said.

“What they’re hoping happens then is there’s a Democrat administration that awards amnesty to millions of people. That’s not going to happen. We’re going to enforce laws in this country and people will get hearings quicker.”
