Uwe Boll Eying Gina Carano for His ‘Citizen Vigilante 2’

Director Uwe Boll is moving fast on his next projects. He already has 23 Years Later: Return to Zombie Island in development, which brings him back to the zombie world he first explored in House of the Dead. There is also talk of more game-based films, including a possible follow-up to Alone in the Dark. But his clearest next step is Citizen Vigilante 2, which already has a planned release window.
The first Citizen Vigilante starred Armie Hammer and pulled strong attention online. That response has Boll thinking ahead. During an appearance on the PBD Podcast, he said he wants Gina Carano in the sequel. “I would totally put her in it,” Boll said. “She got cancelled, unjustified, and came back. She’s a good actress and she would be kickass. I feel the second part should have a few guys, maybe not only one person.”
Carano remains a known figure from women’s MMA and action films. Her roles in Haywire and The Mandalorian leaned on her physical presence. That career path changed in 2021 when Lucasfilm fired her after a series of political social media posts. Carano later sued Disney and Lucasfilm with backing from Elon Musk’s legal fund. She argued her political views led to her removal. The case ended in a settlement before trial.

Adding Carano may not guarantee success, but it would make a statement. Boll has not backed away from the tone that defined Citizen Vigilante. The film drew criticism for its portrayal of migrant crime and vigilante justice. Boll claimed Germany’s ratings system refused to classify the film. He told Daily Telegraph that the decision was intentional. “It was a deliberate censorship decision,” he said. “I hired a lawyer to complain about it, but we lost in a six-two vote as I was told that the film was inciting violence against migrants.”
Despite the backlash, Boll pushed the film hard online. He released it for free on X for a limited time, and Elon Musk amplified the move. That push drove attention, even if critics stayed harsh. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a 6 percent critic score and a 93 percent audience score.
Boll has brushed off the reviews. He told The Wrap he doesn’t care about critics and pointed to audience numbers instead. “94% on Rotten Tomatoes or 4.5 on Amazon shows that the audience loves the film,” he said. The gap between critics and viewers may be the real story. A sequel with Carano would likely build on that divide and keep the film in the spotlight.
Carano has already started a return to public work, including her Netflix MMA bout with Ronda Rousey. If she decides to sign on for Citizen Vigilante 2, it would mark another step in a comeback that still draws strong reactions on both sides.
